Welcome to the 2018 Holiday Blog

Hi All

Well we are off again on a trip, and as usual I am looking forward to sharing the adventure with you my kindly readers.

For those of you who haven't followed my previous holiday blogs it is worth noting that I use the blog for my own memories as much as I do for sharing the journey with others. So please bear with me if I go off on riffs of my own interest. Some of our regular readers suggest that my own interest often involves food (more specifically meat), and it is true that this journey will also take us to some lovely places to eat, as well as the wonderful things we will see.

As ever I hope the blog will prove interesting to others and welcome you to subscribe to the blog for the journey - see the link on the right of the page.

It is also great to have people commenting on the blog. In previous years our holidays have been influenced with bright ideas from the readers and by tips from people who have been to places we are about to visit, so please feel free to use the comments to contribute to the fun of our three weeks away.

Where are we going

The map below gives an overview of our route. We begin our journey on Friday (the 3rd of August) and will be back in the UK on Saturday the 25th of August.

At the heart of the journey is a trip across Canada from Quebec Province to British Columbia including all the Canadian Provinces we've not previously visited.

Tomorrow's post will give a background to the planning that went into the holiday. It all began with an idea in 2009, it has taken a while to come to fruition, but we are soon about to start.

  1. Brilliant! If you are heading to the airport on 3rd our paths may cross on the motorway as I head to Heathrow to collect my son. I will enjoy my armchair crossing of Canada - the only place on my very short list (2) of places I wanted to visit that I have not seen. Have a brilliant hols both!

    1. Hi Linda,

Yes we are flying from Heathrow - what time are you there?

I'll really looking forward to the parts of the country we've not been to in the past.

  2. Have a great time both, as you know, we just got back. It was awesome and the scenery is second to none.

    1. I have made plenty of notes of your favourite places to influence our journey, thanks. I won't get to all of them, as we are on a longer journey than you did this time. But for me the journey is part of the holiday, not just the arriving.

    2. I totally agree Haydn, I will be watching too as we want to visit the East of Canada next time :-) Safe travels

    3. If you want to look at the far East - Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Price Edward Island - then we did that back in 2011. The blog of that journey (or at least the Canadian bit) starts here.

  3. I'm sitting comfortably: looking forward to another journey of discovery.

    1. Thanks Robin,

you were the first and remain the most regular commentator on the blog (though Linda gives you a good run for the money when she is not in New Zealand).

I look forward to your insights this time. Have you travelled in Canada at all?

  4. Looks great, I've been to Quebec City after skiing Mont Tremblant and visited Montreal. Then skied at Whistler and stayed in Vancouver and visited Vancouver Island - that was lovely. Had an old world charm and looked very European. Are you going to go there? Another year toured British Columbia, skiing again, that was fab. So I've seen either end of your trip and nothing of the middle!

    1. We went to Vancouver Island in 2009, but only to Victoria .

Apart from the USA parts of the trip at start and finish everything will be new to us this time 😀
